Invited in late 2020 to create a mural, the proposed art was finally approved, and installed in late 2021. One of two that took the longest to get approved over the last year. Below are some pics of my process, showing how I used my home as a studio, since most of 2021, I had a shoebox studio of 8x9ft!
Proposed concept was to have the hallway wall show diverse staff using brand colors. Staff handprints on the figures representing those who were downtown during the protests of 2020. The figures would be cut out of the plywood used outside, to give people in the building a physical connection to the memory of what happened. The figures are torsos only, as the install could not happen below the waist, as that area of the hallways is used for directional wayfinding. My concept puts these life size figures in line with everyone walking by, bringing them into the concept of standing with caring heroes.
After buying the boards to do cut outs, I first started production by strategically placing background colors
I sent the painted boards back to Grant so staff could add thier handprints and create the texture I need to lay in the details before cutting out the figures.
